I originally planned on using Pathfinder for Aerinwohl and the world of the Darkfall. That’s all well and good, its a robust system with a lot of material to use, but Paizo went ahead and announced that they are working on a second edition of Pathfinder. It won’t be out for at least another year, probably not until GenCon 2019, but that still puts a damper on my plans. So instead, I may have to learn to use the 5th edition Dungeons & Dragons rules.
I haven’t read much about the 5e rules and have not played it at all. There are rumors that they will be releasing a new edition of Dark Sun, which would be great if that happened. I’ve always loved Dark Sun. When or if Dark Sun comes out, then there will have to be rules for psionics since that is baked into the setting. I would love to be able to use psionics in a 5e version of Aerinwohl, but I’m not sure I want to wait around for those official rules to come out.
The release schedule for 5e is also very sparse. I think they are intentionally taking their time to avoid the glut of releases that came with 3e and 3.5. Don’t fill the market place too fast and they can continue developing without having to come out with strange and different books every other month to make more sales and fill bookshelves.
So what do I do?
I will spend the next few days reading through the 5e manuals. I think I have most of them, and those I don’t have I can get. If I know enough about the system and understand everything, I could write the psionics rules myself or see if someone else has released their own rules already. I’ve heard that some rules are in the pipeline for Mystic or something, which I assume is the psionics rules, but until it is officially released, we won’t know for certain.
So for now, I’m going to work on reading 5e, getting to know the system intuitively, and then work on adapting the Aerinwohl setting to the 5e rules. Pathfinder 1e is ending, so I might as well go with what is being developed. When 2e Pathfinder comes out, maybe I can use those rules, but without knowing what its going to be like, there isn’t much I can do at this point.
